CRACKDOWN ON UNINSURED DRIVERS

The Government estimates that 6.5% of drivers are uninsured. Every year around 300,000 are convicted of driving without insurance. The penalty for driving without insurance is a fine of up to £5000 and 6 to 8 penalty points.

At the moment it is an offence to drive an uninsured vehicle. Under new proposals announced on the 20th January 2009 it will become an offence to keep an uninsured vehicle.

The DVLA and the insurance industry will identify uninsured vehicles. The owners of such vehicles will receive warning letters and a deadline within which to insure.
Failure to insure will lead to an initial £100 fine followed by seizure and detention if the vehicle remains uninsured.

Says Rebecca Cooke of Olliers Motor Law “at first impression it may seem harsh to require an individual to insure a vehicle that genuinely is not being used”.
“However, the Department of Transport points out that uninsured and untraced drivers kill 160 people and injure 23,000 every year. What’s more uninsured driving adds £30 a year to every motorist’s premium.”
“I only hope that the insurance companies are sympathetic, offering reduced premiums to those drivers with vehicles that are not in use.”
