There has been much publicity in recent years about the danger of lone women, or indeed men, flagging down a taxi following a night out.

Whilst the vast majority of taxi drivers are honest and hardworking, there have been many cases of either licensed or unlicensed drivers picking up vulnerable people and allegations of sexual assault have followed. This has led to many local authorities cracking down on taxi drivers who pick up fares that are not pre-booked through their control room.

CRACKDOWN ON UNINSURED DRIVERS

The Government estimates that 6.5% of drivers are uninsured. Every year around 300,000 are convicted of driving without insurance. The penalty for driving without insurance is a fine of up to £5000 and 6 to 8 penalty points.

SIX POINTS FOR EXCESSIVE SPEEDERS

Under proposals outlined by the Department for Transport drivers who exceed the speed limit by more than 20 miles per hour could face a fixed penalty of six points. The obvious impact is that after two such convictions a driver would be liable for at least a six month disqualification under the totting up provisions.

FIVE YEARS FOR SENDING A TEXT WHILST DRIVING

New Legislation which came out on the 18th August 2008 means that drivers who kill whilst avoidably distracted face up to five years in custody. The previous maximum sentence for causing death by careless driving was a fine and penalty points.
